It finally smells like proper autumn. The horses are happy, at least; though clearing their grazing of giant oak leaves is more of a chore than I'd have thought. Seems they're just falling all of a sudden. Was it this bad last autumn

I don't remember it being this bad, but maybe I just didn't have giant leaf fall on me last year.

Then again, this time last year we were having a damned inland hurricane, so who can say for certain?

The dead squirrels worry me more, truth to tell. One, I could understand, but with Paladin's report that's two I've heard of so far.

I'd say it's more than that.

Change, and death. One sees these two things laid out in opposition. Which is this?

I don't think the leaves have ever been quite like this. They've turned colors like a normal tree's before--these look sick.

What does the Wilderness look like?

You're right. They look more like they're rotting right on the branch.

There's an open grassland, going on what seems to be forever. But the elevator is hidden inside the trunk of a tree that goes up, until you can just see something that looks nothing so much like the islands floating around the Tree.

It's probably good that it isn't blank anymore, but you can really see the islands? The mist is still there when I look down from them.

Things are dying and the Wilderness comes back. [curlicues] I don't know either.

I'm pretty sure I recognised the shape of Melee Island, and it's in the right position with regard to the other big one--which I think is Captain Planet. There's no cloud cover from below.

I am recovering, Hawk, thank you for asking. And I have no doubt the Watch would be incredibly busy after  that, so don't you worry.

Things have settled now. I even took a few days off. Which should, by rights, mean time for friends.

I think that Spring has a better smell, but Fall is a good season.

Rebirth and decay. Both have their places, I imagine.

I'll not contend that. Spring is a restless season; autumn makes one linger. But sometimes it is good to stop, too.

I'm not sure, actually. But then again, I think I spent most of this time last year down in the Wilderness, and half of that in bed.

Really? I hadn't heard that. Might have to make a trip down there soon.

It's a remarkable sight. I wish I had a--not a spyglass. What's that smaller gadget called, with one for each eye?
