this was also back when people wrote really formally, and it wasn't cool to abuse grammar and punctuation.

lolol this totally just reminds me of what happened to me today. I was trying to read some Thomas Hobbes and I kept thinking to myself, "Oh my gods, this guy writes in that pretentious fic-writing style!" because he writes in this disjointed, fragmented-sentences way, and does not seem to understand that ;≠:≠,≠. Drove me up the wall.

i've never read hobbes before but i read a story by david malouf and he writes the same way? not disjointed fragments, but he abused the semi-colon like MAD. at one point, there was an entire page and a bit that was composed of one single sentence. A PAGE. when we came to analyze it, people complained that it was hard to remember what he was talking about because by the time they got to the end of the sentence they'd forgotten what he said at the beginning of it.
