i don't have much to do this holiday so i looked at lern2japanese books in pageone (aka. pretty much the only predominantly!english bookshop chain in hong kong).

every single textbook in english was way too easy.

every single textbook in chinese was way too hard.

Is your Japanese self-taught? I've been trying to pick up my self-studying as of late, since I just sit at a desk and play PSP at work nowadays, but I don't have any specific approach, so it just ends up being exercises out of my "gaijin business speak" textbooks. Not exactly the most effective way to learn when I wanna learn enough to not spend 5 minutes on each screen of P3P. D:

i did it formally for about a year or so, but it was in melbourne so the class was pretty slow. :\ after that, yeah, i've been trying to learn on my own but i don't really know where to start-- i've been looking for books since they'd be a little more proper and useful than me just picking up random phrases like "OH MY GOD!" and "KILL THE BASTARD!" from anime but... yeah, the book search isn't going well. how's the "gaijin business speak" book, more useful or no? i saw one today but i'm really wanting to learn more for daily conversation and to read manga than to actually do business and stuff. >.>

see, i had a look at the second link, and even though it looks really good, most of it covers stuff that i already know. D: i'm nowhere near what you could call 'good' at japanese, but beginning japanese is always really beginner and intermediate... well, i haven't found an intermediate one yet but i really want it to exist. =__=

yeah, i wouldn't mind doing that! i was thinking, "where am i going to be seeing that much japanese," but then i remembered that i have doujinshi. so my vocab list could actually be a whole translation sheet, ahaha.
