I'm too exhausted to leave a proper comment now, but I just wanted to say that this is really a gem. You've hit the angst and the atmosphere notes perfectly. This is Alex/Richard AU (or flash-sideways) as it should be done.
Oh hey, amnesia trope done right. As if there was any doubt.
I really like how you handled this. I like how they already were an established thing from the beginning and how you dealt with the gaps in his memory (remembering the lay of the land but not the people). Your description is all just so lovely as always.
He treats her like a child. He asks about her parents. She is still young, after all. She's a woman now, but barely just. Nineteen. And she's certainly more than an age or two younger than Richard. So he treats her as such. She's just one of the many face in the camp.
She's just a kid.
No lover, no woman, no object of desire.
That part really makes me feel for her. It kind of hurts in this really surprising way.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked this even though it is lost, haha. This is one of those fics that just sort of fell together in a way that I couldn't have planned. It wrote itself, let's be honest, haha.
lol, I love when people quote back stuff at me and I notice a typo. Instant proofreading. Although, tbh, I didn't even notice. My brain sees what it wants to see.
I love when fics fall together like that. So much more fun than really having to work for it.
