River was eating an orange when Jayne ambled into the mess. Bits of pale rind littered the big table in front of her as she tore the sections apart with her thin fingers. She popped a small piece into her mouth with a blissful sigh and he found himself salivating in response. The tangy scent hung in the air, promising sweet fresh flavor to his taste buds.
She looked up, catching his gaze as she licked the juice from her fingers and mumbled through a mouthful of fruit, “Wan’ some?”
He nodded dumbly and crossed the room quickly until he towered over her. She ripped off a wedge and held it up to him. Juice dripped down her hand, leaving a sticky trail to her wrist. He hesitated for only a moment before leaning down and capturing the morsel with his teeth, careful to keep his mouth from touching her skin.
River wilted with disappointment. Another opportunity dismissed. She thought with enough time her desire for his kisses would fade, that she could deny her craving until it no longer bothered her when he refused her his lips. But the empty feeling in her stomach came back every time.
Jayne’s breath caught in his throat as the tart flavor coated his tongue. He swallowed the soft flesh of the fruit and swept his tongue across his teeth, savoring the lingering tang.
Fragmented images of the dream he’d had the night before filtered through his mind. In his dream he’d kissed her, tasted every inch of her body and hadn’t been afraid. He’d let himself share the most intimate part of himself that had been repressed so deeply he’d almost forgotten it was there. Afterwards he’d woken up scared. He’d spent the morning shaken and nervous; he didn’t want to trust her, didn’t want to wish he knew what her skin tasted like, but he did. And now, licking the sweet remnants from his lips, he was overcome with the need to find out.
River returned to her orange, tearing off a small piece for herself. She almost wished Jayne would leave, it was easier to pretend she didn’t care when he wasn’t around. Her hand was halfway to her mouth when his long fingers wrapped around her wrist, gently tugging her arm up towards him. She felt a slight tremor work its way through him before her fingertips disappeared into his mouth.
Her eyes rolled shut like window shades hiding lovers from the outside world. His mouth was hot and wet as he sucked the orange slice from between her digits and she gave a little moan when he ran his tongue along her nail beds. With each exhale puffs of warm breath brushed against her knuckles, tingling along her nerve endings, making her whimper with need.
When Jayne finally let her fingers slip from between his lips, she dragged air deep into her lungs and opened her eyes to meet his. She could see the fear and desire fighting inside him. He wasn’t ready to trust her yet, but he was letting her into his heart little by little and that gave her hope.
