It's got to be due a tiny bit to Seattle. I've noticed that kind of thing happens all the time on the bus: from technical discussions about creating a vacuum to advice sought on buying a house, and deeper. I once fell in love on the bus. This city is like that--instant and true intimacy in public spaces. Not sure why, yet, but your experiences are not atypical.

These encounters with a very raw level of human emotion leave me shaken, both because of my powerlessness, and because they hint at things I could do, but am too selfish.

On the other hand, just admitting to and acknowledging shared humanity -- which some people wouldn't do with an addict -- is helping. It may be a tiny little bit of help, but it's still something people need, especially when down and out.
