This sounds like some really interesting stuff. It got me thinking of people like, well, Anakin Skywalker -- what if they hadn't made him a Knight, but let him become an explorer instead? After all, that's what little Anakin seems to want at some point in Episode 1: to visit all the planets "up there." But then, would he have settled for anything less cool than knighthood? One has to wonder.

I must say the whole bit about Palpatine bothers me, though! The idea seems to be that those "less cool" people are more susceptible to the lure of the Dark Side; and in fact, the worst falls were always those of the Knights, usually very prominent ones, the cream of the crop, so to speak (thinking of Revan here, too). One can argue that a mediocre person will only have a mediocre fall and will eventually be used by some evil mastermind like Palpatine...but something about this still bugs me. :)

It's not quite as bad as that in the scenario Phil proposes: in his suggestion, only about 1% of the Service Corps falls for Palpatine's lies. A hundred new henchmen for the Emperor is still pretty good. But percentage-wise, there probably were more actual knights who turned to the Dark Side.
