Oy, this week. Spent the weekend finishing my 7-8 page Graphic Novels paper and then writing the two 7-8 page halves of the Translation Theory final--I ended up staying up until 7am on Monday to finish the half on Faust, but I think my work was actually pretty solid. ...When I read "the musical from Melchior raping Wendla to them having tender, consensual sex?" I actually read "From Melchior rapping Wendla into having tender, consensual sex" and I was just....I don't remember rap at that part of the musical at all. The thing you actually wrote there makes significantly more sense, but makes me sort of ashamed I don't know the actual story.

I hope you maintain that determination with your reading group.

Heehee. Rap would be...interesting. Are there any rap musicals, aside from maybe Idlewild? If that counts?

Also, you should totally read the original play--most of the translations are pretty decent, although my favorite for the most readable, the Tom Osborn, is really hard to find. The 1912 Francis J. Ziegler translation is really accurate word-for-word, though, if that's important to you. Translation nerdity aside, it's good to read, I think, and consider in comparison to the musical; Steven Sater and his team really made Melchior a more sympathetic character, and took (what I think are) some of Mortiz' best lines/parts away. Especially when, near the end, the dead Moritz tries to convince Melchior to kill himself. XD Anyway, yeah.

Oh, me too. I'm going to badger at least the few people I really made friends with to read with me.

Can I borrow a reasonable translation from you at some point? I would have no idea what to look for in a translation, quite honestly, except for truthiness. XD
