This summer in California there will be a major meeting of a "pray away your gay" group, and in the mid west and east coast is the NOM (National Organization for Marriage [inequality]) sponsored tour that boils down to "pray the gay out of our country" group

Why is the Catholic church so anti-gay?

Likely the same root reason as them being so anti-contraception. The more children your followers have, the more "automatic" followers you wind up with... power through numbers, kind of. Though why they feel the need for "phenomenal cosmic powers" I've never understood.

Because they want to control the whole mating/sex thing. If they control the say-so over who you love and who you have sex with, they control the world.
