Congrats on the adoption. As the "sister" of a beagle (because he really belongs to my parents as much as I protest otherwise), I applaud your choice of doggie. Beagles and Basset Hounds are such great dogs; I know you'll love having one. Just remember they are stubborn, which makes breaking them of bad habits a trial (I'll let you know if we ever finish breaking Duke of all of his).

You might want to check out the beagle community (I think just called beagles... check out my profile) or one of the basset hound communities here on LJ for some advice on the breed(s), tips, stories and pictures.

Again, good luck with Zinfandel and congrats.

aww thank you!! i should definitely check out one of those communities, i'm sure it would be a big help.

he was a holy terror on his walk this morning, sniffing at absolutely EVERYTHING. we really might need to take him to obedience school to help us out.

I totally recommend obedience school because it can be such a great help in training your dog. Duke went twice. Just keep in mind that you may never really break him of his sniffing habit. We had the same problem with Duke and were told by multiple vets and trainers that it's almost impossible to break hounds of the habit. Hounds have a very keen sense of smell as they are hunters/trackers and once they get a scent, they will follow it forever. Still, training will probably help because you'll be able to train him to heed your command(s) even when he's caught a scent. It really helped with Duke, although he does have occasional relapses.

Sorry to keep going on and on about my experiences with Duke. I just know what you and Greg are going through as Duke was the first hound my family owned and some things came as a surprise. Best of luck; Zinfandel's such a cutie!
