Yours did the trick wonderfully. I love the imagery of the lake and the raising of Excalibur, just lovely.

But I have to ask - If everyone's memories of Merlin are to disappear with his 'death,' did you imagine the memories to go away like *snap* that or fade slowly? Because that last part, with Arthur still remembering, but Merlin already gone...Am I going to have to think that you've cursed Arthur to a horrible life in which he will always remember Merlin, the real one? Because Arthur, being who and what he is, maybe one of the few who can remember.
Thank you for the read.

Arthur catches the laundry basket just before it tumbles out of Gwen's hands. Over her apologising, he rearranges the clothes and shyly takes in her lovely brown eyes and nervous smile.
As she turns to walk away, he can't help but call out.
"You know Guinevere, today's the one year anniversary of when you first accosted me and made me stop using the squires as target practise."
The minute it leaves his mouth, it feels wrong. He shakes it off.
Gwen looks puzzled for a moment, before her face clears.
"I'm sorry for calling you a royal prat, sire."
Arthur laughs, trying to squash the uneasy feeling inside him, and walks to his lessons with Merlin.

BUT I AM A BIG WOOBIE, AND I JUST WANT ARTHUR TO LOVE MERLIN FOREVER. So, ummm...
It's supposed to be a bit ambiguous, but mostly everyone forgets about Merlin, except for those who don't want to.
:D (Sorry for the massive comment)

Ahh, but if they couldn't see or feel or interact with Merlin anymore, would anyone want to remember? Oh, what a situation...

Yes, but that's why Merlin wanted the sorcerer to take his name. And I don't think that Arthur would forget, really.

Waaah. Sniff.
I do really, really like how you've incorporated Merlin of legends with BBC Merlin. This makes well - perfect sense - in a lovely distressing way.
when Merlin reemerges, water plastering his hair to his ridiculous ears and looking very much like a drowned cat illuminated by the sun. Arthur forgets to breathe.
Aw.

I'm glad it did make sense! And it's nice to know what worked for you :)
