I love HHMI conferences.  Love love love love.  The people are interesting, the conference is run smoothly, and the accomodations are incredible.  We all get our own little bedroom and bathroom right in the HHMI compound, with little bottles of lotion and a soft duvet (no sketchy floral polyester coverlet here!) and a basket of snacks in the common ( Read more... )

I for one LOVED living in the DC area and can highly recommend it. In fact I also have high hopes of ending up there myself after vet school, if I can get my old employers at Alexandria Animal Hospital to hire me back as a vet. Really spectacular place to live.

Ditto. I've found DC one of my favorite cities as a tourist, as a staying-with-parents-for-a-couple-months-er, and as a full-time resident. The metro is one cool thing and another is the access to all the cool cultural stuff (free museums, tours of government places, monuments, cherry blossoms in the spring...)

Alice, that would be really cool if you ended up here too! Of course Alexandria is really about 90 minutes away from Rockville whether by metro or driving, but anyway it would be much closer than New Zealand :)

My sister (harobed) lives in Alexandria right now and has been in the DC area for the last 3 years. She has written about lots of the cool activities they have there; recently, they projected artwork onto the national cathedral. She also posts a lot of pictures on her flickr account. There's also a lot of pictures of her cats on there, sorry.

That might be the first time in recorded history that "paroxysms" and "biscotti" have been used in the same sentence.

Also, DC sucks on ice.

Sucks on ice? That's... bad, right?

And don't get me started about CHICAGO's ice problem.

Yes but we have Free Bacon Mondays. That's right. The entire city.

Hehe--DC's Metro is nice, but in the city, that's about it. The city services are really pretty terrible, in my opinion. From police (we called about a woman on the street outside of our apartment who was assaulting a man who appeared to be unable to walk and the police hadn't shown up 45 minutes later when they drove away) to fire (the New York Times editor who was killed after the paramedics who were supposed to help him decided he was just drunk--it turned out he had an epidural bleed from being hit over the head during a robbery) to the DMV (Julia and I spent a combined eight hours in the last ten days at the DMV to finally get our car registered).

That said, I think some of the areas in Maryland and Virginia (I prefer Maryland) that are within commuting distance to Washington are fairly nice. I definitely miss the West Coast "attitude" but since you're from out here, probably not so much for you. =)

PS--you were in Washington this week??

Yeah, I'm getting funding from HHMI for the research year I'm wrapping up, and they flew us all out there to present our findings at their conference. =) I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to look you up! They structured our time from about 7:30AM to 9:30PM, though... even our four-hour social activity was bowling at the Nat'l Naval Medical Center bowling alley, not even "take the metro to the museums" which would've been a lot more fun. (You try bowling for four hours.) Hope everything's going well with you and Julia, and I'm sorry I didn't get to see you! =)
