Buffy sat on the park bench and stared at nothing. Lost in her dark thoughts she did not hear her Watcher approach from behind. Nor did she seem to notice when he sat beside her.
“Buffy?”
She jumped to her feet and spun towards him, stake raised in defense. “God, Giles. You scared me. Didn’t they teach you in Watcher school not to sneak up on a Slayer?” She quipped, but Giles noticed that her fake merriment did not reach her eyes.
“I shouldn’t have been able to sneak up on you at all. What were you thinking about that had you so distracted?”
“Nothing. Guess I suck on an all new level. I’m sorry, Giles. Sorry, you were burdened with such a screwed up Slayer.”
“Buffy.” He pulled off his glasses and began to polish them. “Please sit.”
Reluctantly she complied, but she still refused to look at him.
“Buffy, look at me please.” His gaze was fierce, determined, yet compassionate. “Why would you ever think yourself a burden? Don’t you realize you’re my hero?”
