The funny thing about those bots is that they are not entirely bots...
It only results from "public" posts, and they START OUT IMing you with a random conversation starter - some are taken from key words in your entry, and some are just... random.
But as soon as you respond to it, you are talking to someone else (random person anywhere in the world) who posted a public entry recently, as well. They appear as the generated SN to you, but you appear as the SAME SN to them! It's a relay bot, I think. Kind of genius, but really annoying.
I don't know if it works anymore or for all screen names, but I do know that if you can get the other person talking (and the relay SN is something to do with Salmon) and you mention Project Upstream, you are automatically disconnected with them (they will no longer be able to respond) and are even, in my case, re-routed to another person FROM the project itself! So strange.
Yeah, I was so confused the first time that I did research. Insatiable curiosity + constant 'net access + napping baby =
type !optout or $optout whenever you get the message. i forget which one it is, but its a study from some college that pairs up two random people to try to start a conversation. i got tired of it too haha
edit: it is $optout. type it into the im and press enter and follow the instructions after that. i was bitching about it in one of my posts and found the solution. hahaha
