I'm reading a statement from a Physician in Kalamazoo regarding this issue and he basically states that "the proposal is deceptive and will allow unregulated and unrestricted experimentation on live human embryos" and "contains many loop-holes" So, I do believe its a much more complicated issue than we see at face value.

My objection is that human life is being destroyed for experimentation. I am for stem cell research (as is the Catholic Church) but not embryonic stem cells where human life is destroyed. The progress being made thus far is not with embryonic stem cells. The progress made has been with adult stems cells. There are very important moral, philosophical, and ethical principals involved here that underlie this proposal. Its a complicated issue for sure.

The war example is a completely separate issue with its own set of moral principles.

"The US has appropriated more $400 billion to date on the disastrous War in Iraq debacle. If just 1% of that amount was set aside for US embryonic stem cell research, most scientists and medical researchers believe that many millions of lives can be restored and saved."

"Scientists see almost infinite value in the use of embryonic stem cell research to understand human development and the growth and treatment of dieases."

"Actual cures are many years away, though, since research (due to legal red tape) has not progressed to the point where even one cure has yet been generated by embryonic stem cell research."

Without trying, we will surely fail.
