Rowan's favorite poems

"Giving Potatoes" Adrian Mitchell
"maggie and millie and mollie and may" e. e. cummings
"Jabberwocky" Lewis Carroll

I love hearing him recite snatches of them. He memorizes entire picture books, so this is no surprise - but it still gives me an extra lift. See: http://instagram.com/p/ ( Read more... )

I am a great fan of e e cummings. In addition to maggie and millie and mollie and may, there's a lovely one I read out at my sister's wedding: i thank you god for most this amazing day.

Can't say I've tried out poetry on A - though she remembers bits of Seuss we haven't read for a while, and some favourite bits of Shirley Hughes too (latter is published as children's illustrated books rather than as poetry, but straddles both sides).

There's lots of classics like Longfellow who wrote songy, rhymey poems. I feel like we had a book of poems like that when I was a kid. Ogden Nash? Poe? Not as fun for you tho, maybe (I don't really enjoy that style). Christina Rossetti has some kid's poems too.

13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird?

Donald Hall has some children's books, though I have no idea if any of them contain poetry. And I'm quite fond of Shell Silverstein!

This was fun to think about as I lay awake with insomnia. If I come up with anymore I'll come back. :)

I think you can find a lot of good stuff in Billy Collins.

There is a lovely series of picture books that matches up poems and painters, first one was Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou with paintings by Basquiat. I like/have the whole series, but that one and the Romare Bearden one are particularly nice. You can always do Shel Silverstein, too. And, there are some nice books of poetry "for kids" that are collections of "real" poems that are accessible. Caroline Kennedy (of all people) has one that we were given. And, last but not least, book sales are good places to pick up odd ones. We found one called The Pedaling Man by someone we'd never heard of that has short, nature/farm-oriented ones that B. likes. I also found one that's animal-themed, with some longer ones (Tiger Tiger and the like).

You are inspiring me to pull out some of those, thank you! Will be a welcome break from the recitation of Gerald and Piggy books.
