Coming to terms with wanting to win. Then, some knitting.

This is not a pretty phase I'm going through. No no. It feels like a hole in the chest, a heart ripped out: the acknowledgement that I want to win means facing the times when I didn't win, when I lost. And oh let me tell you that basically every day I am not the winner. (Don't confuse this with being "a loser," or not being "a winner." It's different.)

Stay tuned for far more pondering of this question than may be palatable.

In the meantime, here's a scarf-in-progress:

This is a very simple, happy little Kidsilk Haze scarf. I saw a woman wearing a scarf, probably purchased somewhere or other with an itchy little tag, that made me think: I should knit a simple scarf on biggish needles with Kidsilk Haze. Why not? Here's the simple-as-all-get out pattern:

Using Kidsilk Haze (or one of its cousins) and size 8 needles, cast on 40 stitches. Knit a row. Next row, slip the first stitch and purl. Following row, slip the first stitch and knit. Carry on; at first you will have a wimpy little square, but before long, knitting rows here and there when you have a chance, you'll have a lovely, undulating piece of fabric worthy of the finest necks.

(I've decided to write a pattern for Seth's World Champion Colors scarf, too, though again, it's hardly a pattern. Nonetheless, I'll tag them as patterns--feel free to use them as starting points!)

I do have one question for you: When you slip your first stitch of every row, do you do it knitwise always? I've been going purlwise on the purl rows here. Normally, I'm not an edge-stitch-slipper. And usually (though vellumblue and I debated this with a customer recently) I slip as if to knit in my ssks, for example. Discuss, please!
