From today's In the news section on Wikipedia:

"More than 70 people are buried and presumed dead as the result of two earthquakes in Afghanistan."

I don't think there's anything wrong with that: they were buried (by rubble, probably) in the earthquakes and are presumed dead. It would be better as "More than 70 people are buried as the result of two earthquakes in Afghanistan and presumed dead" or even with just commas added: "More than 70 people are buried, and presumed dead, as the result of two earthquakes in Afghanistan." But as a news brief, it seems OK to me.

That's what I assumed, but I thought it could have been worded better... and yes, the commas would have made the sentence make more sense.
