Returning home, Crane climbed the stairs to knock on Elise's door. "Elise. May I speak to you for a moment?"

The young woman looked up from her studies. "Of course," she said, not rising but making sure her voice would be heard. "The door isn't locked."

"It's still a matter of privacy, Elise." He smiled indulgently at her. "You certainly wouldn't come into my room unannounced, would you?"
