Greta wanted to come visit. In and of itself, that was not worrying. After all, Elise had talked herself about spending the summer in Germany with Greta for company. Returning home, Crane climbed the stairs to knock on Elise's door. "Elise. May I speak to you for a moment?"

The young woman looked up from her studies. "Of course," she said, not rising but making sure her voice would be heard. "The door isn't locked."
