This movie was actually the first of JW's pre-mainstream films I ever saw. I knew Cry-Baby and Hairspray and Polyester, but I'd never seen any of his true "midnight movies" until this one. Desperate Living was my introduction to that entire era of his career. It was kind of the end of his cult-films-for-a-cult-audience era, and I think he wanted to go out with a bang. JW's pre-Polyester films were tough to see for a long time... mainly because of music rights. This one, of course, has an original score instead of the rock/R&B oldies featured in Waters' other films, so it was on VHS when the others weren't. Lucky me. I bought it at the mall as a teenager and was honestly kind of afraid of it. It's a harsh film in a lot of ways. Now, I've probably seen it 20 times.

True story: I was just swapping favorite DL quotes with other fans in a Mink Stole newsgroup just a few hours ago. (I started the thread with "Get out of here, mongoloid! And take your stinking corpse of a boyfriend with you!")

Mink Stole could teach a master class on how to be a hysteric on film.
