I enjoyed it but me and my b/f were annoyed at how they kept switching to other scenes during the fights until the very end. It just irked us. We went to the film to see Godzilla. To be honest I never paid that much attention to the main guy lol. Sad Bryan's character died though.
For the most part, I agree with you (and your boyfriend). The cutaway to the main guy's son watching one of the battles unfold on TV was pretty great, though. "Look, mommy. Dinosaurs!"
I think you're being a bit tough on this one. Having semi-recently revisited the Roland Emmerich Godzilla, with its chintzy-looking effects and embarrassing ham acting, I can say that the 2014 'zilla is a damned sight better than the 1998 model. One of the reasons is the almost total absence of comic relief. An overabundance of yuks (or attempted yuks) is a big part of what sank the '98 film, so I think the new film is a self-conscious attempt to take this material -- which, let's face it, is absurd enough on its own -- somewhat seriously. Giant monsters are already silly. They don't need clever screenwriters helping them out on that front. So the characters are thinly-developed and the script is top-heavy with exposition? Guilty on both charges, I guess, but I've seen my fair share kaiju flicks in the last few years, and I've found that they're all pretty much like that. You get a few minutes of the monsters and a whole bunch of minutes of scientists and military guys talking about the plot. That applies across the board. Across. The
