Thoughts on "Darjeeling"/"Hotel" anonymous November 6 2007, 00:14:33 UTC
I had seen "Hotel Chevalier" online, and it came advertised as "part 1 of the Darjeeling Limited." The feature itself felt like the middle film in a trilogy -- Wes Anderson's "Empire Strikes Back," if you will. I liked it a lot -- the production design and cinematography, the performances, the music, and the dialogue. But at the end I was like, "Wha...? Did they skip a reel or something?" I guess the ending of the movie is whatever you want it to be. Open-ended, I guess they'll call it. In retrospect, I've decided to be satisfied with what *is* in the movie rather than what *isn't* there. Seeing "Hotel" first was somewhat helpful in piecing together the puzzle, at least as far as Jason Schwartzman's character is concerned. We know, for instance, that the story Schwartzman writes at the end is VERY much rooted in reality (word for word, I think) even though he claims it's fiction. And without "Hotel," there'd be no explanation for that one glimpse of Natalie Portman in "Darjeeling." It's part of a long, complicated shot ( ... )

I didn't read any of the pre-release publicity, so I didn't know what to expect other than the bare bones of the plot, which I gleaned from the commercials I saw in the week or so leading up to its release. For a while I thought that Bill Murray was meant to be the (re-)incarnation of their father (who pointedly gets left behind when the three sons head off on their journey), but I dismissed that theory when it was revealed that their main tie to their father was his luggage.

Immediately after I walked out of the theater I drove to a store and bought the soundtrack, which I think is amazing. Eventually I'll have to get some Kinks, too.
