I have Plans™ to make a stuffed-animal-sized version of The Scarf for a friend's bear (he has one, but it's just inkjet fabric, and I want him to have a proper scarf). I've got the pattern sussed, but I'm now wondering: Do I make it with embroidery floss, as I'd originally been thinking, or do I try and find crochet cotton in all the right colors ( Read more... )

I've never tried to knit (or crochet) with embroidery floss, though I know people do it. But it's designed to split into strands for embroidery, and I think that would be really annoying when knitting. I'd say crochet cotton would be a lot easier if you can find it in the right colors.

Embroidery floss is a pain to work with. If you're looking for something that small, they'll have balls of thicker embroidery-like threads with the floss, DMC Pearl Cotton size 5 or 3. If you search onine, Joanns, for instance, has a wide selection of colors for sale. It's so much easier to work with than embroidery floss!

Seconding this - I've worked with Pearl Cotton in the past, and it's a dream to knit with! So fun and tiny! That said, the resulting scarf would definitely have a stiffer, more doily-like texture rather than the fuzzier, softer texture you might get if you used a wooly sock yarn.

It is definitely working up considerably more lacy-looking than I'm accustomed to; once it's done I may give it a good hand-wash and see if that softens it any.

I would go with fingering weight (sock) yarn, using US sized 3 or 4 needles (regular pattern calls for sport or worsted, sz 7/8 needles). Knit Picks Palette might be good if you can't find the colors in a LYS. It's designed for colorwork, so there's over 100 colors and several shades of, say, green.

I did indeed look at sock yarn tonight, but decided that it would be too bulky for the teddy bear in question.
