I've kind of wanted to make one for a while but I've been lazy, and then the show came back last week and we had another long weekend and queen procrastinator be damned, I finally started to cobble together River's diary

I'd suggest hand binding--sewing the pages together in signatures. It isn't really all that difficult. I managed to do it after just one tutorial, and the results look great. This looks like a great resource.
The first time you do this will be far from perfect anyway, like with all new techniques. ;o) But you can also do some things deliberately, like not cuttimg the pages exactly the same size, wrinkling the paper before sewing it in or folding the paper sharply and then cutting with a knife along that edge (still folded) to get a slightly uneven/frayed look.
OP, I love the diary and your picutres make me really want to try my hand at it as well. I'd never have thought of using paper towels, but the effect together with the paint is great. Very nifty. :o)
Thanks so much! I'll look into that technique. Good think I have the tester diary so I can try everything out on it first before having a go on the better looking one.
I remembered a video tutorial on bookbinding that I found helpful, especially since the crafter used lots of stuff you probably have at home instead of special bokkbinders glue and things. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccMagyqYeDw It's comprehensive and under 5 minutes, but she followed another crafters longer instructions in about four videos, starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joi3_WsUxE0
I've made two of the diaries. I'm no bookmaking wizard, but there were two things I did that came out well. One was to hand tear the pages rather than cut them evenly. If I was to do another one, I'd tea-dye the pages to make them look older. The other thing was to put the pages together in a bunch of signatures. For once, my lack of precision was helpful. :)
Yeah I plan to dye the pages before hand, which is probably gonna take some time in itself - I'm wondering if the neighbours would think me odd if they looked out and saw pages on the wash line lol.
