file format comparison

I've been getting a few comments lately asking how to save mood images so that they come out clear and sharp instead of fuzzy. You just need to use a higher quality .jpeg. I made a quick tutorial about the difference between image file options, check it out under the cut.

.GIF vs .JPEG vs .PNG )

Actually, I'm pretty sure .png supports transparency. From what I remember, it looks a lot nicer than .gif transparency, too.

I read somewhere that it did, and that it supports different levels of opacity too, but I tried it in PS and it didn't work for me. I'm going to keep trying though, I have a feeling you're right.

Seems like it's kind of touch and go, maybe doesn't always work or doesn't work for everyone. But it's still kinda cool when it does work. :)

Yeah, .png supports transparency. This icon I'm using, for example, was made in Photoshop CS2 and saved as an 8-bit/256 color .png file with transparency.

This is why I always laughed at people that chastise me for using .jpg, when they're using .gif.

I use PNG simply because MS Paint only offers low quality, horrible JPEG. There, laugh at me for using it ;)

But seriously, that's the only reason why I prefer PNG.

All I have to say about this? Is thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Someone needed to prove it. Oh, but of course, I am sure many/several people knew about it. :)

In all honesty, the only reason I use .png over high quality .jpg's is because it saves space. I prefer the .pngs for icons and website graphics. For everything else, though, I'd much rather use the .jpg.
