Why this must be read:

You'd be forgiven, by now, for thinking that the Life on Mars fandom is populated by vicious writers who are just out for blood and insane cackling harridans who want to put the characters into the most unlikely scenario and watch for hilarious results. Well, it's true, at least in part. But we do have our fair share of sweet fic, smoking hot fic and sweet, smoking hot fic. The next two that I'm going to rec here together are of this latter category.

The first, Gunpowder, is part of a multi-fandom trilogy, but can also be read as a standalone. It is a beautiful description of a first kiss. Nothing much happens, but it happens in such a luscious way that it feels palpably real.

Sam's got his back to a brick wall in dingy alley in the middle of the afternoon in 1973 (or maybe a hospital bed in 2006) when he discovers that the inside of Annie's mouth feels real enough.

He doesn't remember who kissed who first or what prompted this particular moment. For him at least, though, it's been coming all day. He knows he's just been waiting for the right opportunity, but right now, right here, in a shadowed alley that smells of concrete and some less pleasant things, he can't remember how this started. It might be about yesterday.
