Why this must be read:

This, along with Qu'est ce que c'est, is one of the two fic I read in the Life on Mars fandom which inspired me, in time, to start writing myself. I like fic on the darker side of life, obviously! Sam is a complex character, seemingly whiter than white, but only because of his own imposed morals. Jillybean asks the question 'what if Sam hadn't imposed those morals on himself' by taking a look at what could've happened if his father, a wannabe crime lord, had stayed with his family. Sam really is a chip off the old block.

This is a wonderful character piece, Sam still acts and behaves the same as in the show, but now he's on the side of the criminals, not the police. It is told from Maya's point of view, a character who doesn't get as much fic exposure as she might.

Spoilers up to Series One, Episode Eight only.

She could feel the eyes of everyone in the room on her as she ascended, knowing that they knew she was only there by invite. They knew she was Sam’s bitch.

She hated it.

Approaching his all-seeing office, she did her best not to scowl as she saw two drug dealers leaving. They nodded to her respectfully, a courtesy she did not extend. "I wish you wouldn’t do that," she said as Sam showed her in.

Wearing a dark, open necked shirt, Sam raised an eyebrow at her. "Do what?"

"Parade them in front of me," she retorted, stalking towards the beautifully set out table that was in the middle of the room. The glass windows at the far end looked out over the restaurant, the light filtering through to their little dining area.

"Why?" He pulled a chair out for her, a grin playing on his lips. Maya had to look away. "What will you do?"
