http://www.geocities.com/jamhandy1/Coffeepleasefic.html Hi! I'm driving the West Wing Crack_Van this month - and I'm a newbie, so please be gentle with me!
I have to start off my saying that I'm a total Josh-whore, so most of the stories you hear about from me are going to be pretty Josh-centric - which a healthy dash of Donna thrown in! Apologies to the slash fans - I really have tried to get my head around it - because I know there's a lot of superbly written stuff out there - but my brain just WON'T go there - sorry. I'll try to give a reasonable mix of the old and the new - I hope there will be some people new to the fandom who will find something they haven't read before - and perhaps some who have been around for a while who might want to re-read something they'd forgotten about!
So, to my first rec.
Why this must be read
I know it's March and from the title, you can tell this is a Christmas/Holiday based story - but it's so good, it deserves to be read any time of the year!
akalettucehead is one of my favourite WW authors - she has the character's voices down pat, she brings the funny, the angst and the fluffy when called for.
This fic was being written at the time the author heard the sad news about John Spencer - and it's dedicated to him.
It's funny, sad, and the Dickensian references are superb - the choice of which characters portray the ghosts is wonderful. And maybe I'm a sap, but the scenes where Josh visits his childhood home before the fire brought a lump to my throat... and then when he returns to the Christmas he gave Donna the ski-ing book - well, I was snuffling by that point.
Donna couldn’t tell, but Josh knew how nervous his younger self was. This Josh wanted to make Donna happy. This Josh wanted to see her smile. A sudden
need to hit this Josh, pound him until he could take no more, overtook the older Josh Lyman. This Josh had Donna everyday.
Maybe if he had gotten her those damn skis, she would have stayed.
Mrs. Landingham’s voice came from the filing cabinet.
“But you never would have, Josh. And she didn’t expect it. That book made her so happy.”
The young Donna Moss looked at her boss. “I don’t know what to say.”
“I wrote a note inside...”
Josh watched himself watch her as she read. “Donna...don’t get emotional... Donna, don’t get... let’s try and maintain some kind of--”
The older Josh walked to where Mrs. Landingham was leaning against the filing cabinet. “I’m telling her not to get emotional? I wanted her to get emotional.”
“You wanted her to like the book.”
Josh looked at his younger self enfold his assistant into his arms. “I wanted her to like me.”
“She did.”
