House Update January 2012

We've been concentrating on getting the kitchen cabinets completed, and the shelves are finally done.  The stovepipe's in place, and the vent hood is almost ready to install.  We still need to make the cabinet facings, drawers, and doors, but the hardwood's been ordered to start that.  But we can use the shelves to spread our stuff out.  My ( Read more... )

Rugosa roses, the thornier the better. I have all kinds of hungry deer here, but they won't touch the rugosas. Reine des violettes, Moje Hammarburg, Hansa. The scent is particularly nice on the first two, whereas Hansa isn't as showy but pretty much indestructible.

I had rugosas at my last house. They and spearmint were the only thing that would grow in the 95% clay soil, and even the rugosas died eventually. I was hoping to branch out into shrub roses here.

I know how you feel but, if you're trying to fend off deer, rugosas are your allies - maybe if you planted shrub roses but sheltered them with rugosas?
