Review: Torchwood S2 12 Fragments

Sorry about the delay.  It's the Secret Origins of Torchwood episode!

I watched the Location Photos thread on OG this summer.  After a report of Jack and Ianto taking out a Weevil but not knowing each other and a report of Tosh working with UNIT, I said, "This is going to be a 'Secret Origins' episode."  Looks like I called it.  ("Secret Origins" ( Read more... )

I've said several times that Gwen is Torchwood's terrier. She finds a problem and worries it to shreds. In contrast Ianto is a Welsh sheepdog. He finds a problem, looks it up and down, and thinks, "How do I get this big, stupid beast to do what I want?" In this case, the big, stupid beast is Jack.

Heh. This is just a lovely image.

I know. :D I was going to link it to a lovely picture of a Welsh sheepdog herding a cow, but the closeup was down. :(

I much prefer Ianto as a Welsh sheepdog than a Welsh pony, for some reason. :-)

I'm sure Jack is always eager for a ride.

And once I realized RTD would never, ever give the Doctor a Companion strong enough to really call his shit on the carpet (say, like Joan Redfern) I lost a lot of enthusiasm.

You might actually like Donna. Jury is still out, but I'm rather hopeful.

Donna makes ordinary into a virtue. I may write that review yet.

Very insightful, as always. I have no idea what "Phoar!" means but I'm pretty sure I agree with it. And I agree with everyone else: I love the terrier vs. sheepdog analogy.

I very much want to comment on the John/Gray dynamic, but I think I'll save that for the finale review.

Like many people, I've been watching Dr. Who since Tom Baker, or maybe a little before. And I have to say that Ten is the first Doctor who doesn't seem quite alien _enough_ to me, while at the same time (as you say) he remains pretty oblivious to human behavior and emotions at times. Makes for decent fanfic, I suppose, but not for great continuity.

I think she might have meant "Phwoar", which is an exclamation associated with finding someone very attractive.

And i really looked forward to this review. I find her insights very enjoyable.

If you look at it as him on a learning curve, it makes sense. He's trying to mimic human behavior without truly understanding it.

Honestly, would it have been any harder to build one that burned out a critical circuit after half an hour? And why on this or any other planet did she trust them to keep their word? Good point!

And I like Riftugees Great review! I didn't like Owen's backstory very much either - it created all sorts of problems with timelines and ages and contradicted that stuff they had on the official site about him having inappropriate relationships with patients (which I did find believable).
