I am laying with Ash willing her to close her eyes and go to sleep. Yes, I have to lay with my 9 YO to get her to sleep. Every fucking night. So instead of playing FarmVille I will do a quick post. There is a lot of great stuff going on but I am going to rant about common core and standardized tests ( Read more... )

Nice to see a post from you!

I am SO confused wiht the changes they have made to the math system! I got really good grades in math and now I am struggling to understand GRADE 3 and 5 math!!!

HUGS to you and Ash!!

I'm finding I don't really like the common core just because it is soooo different from how I learned and it seems to add so many steps into problem solving. I also don't understand why no credit is given for the right answer if they show their work. My husband is a HS math teacher and he has had to look up on the web to find out the answer to some problems because neither of us have any flecking clue what a integrated something something is. He says the goal with common core is to teach them more "mental" math, but I have my doubts ( ... )

I'm so very grateful that we aren't doing a lot of the common core stuff that I see other people posting about - at least not yet.

I feel your pain with the CoGat. Anders tested really low too, but he had been getting 90's in math. I am so confused about what this means other than he can't take a standardized test to save his life.

I feel your pain as I lay next to my youngest trying to get her to sleep!! As for common core. Ugh. I find it hard enough to keep up this year with a second grader and kindergartener. I know it will just get harder! I already see huge differences in what my kindergartener needs to know/learn this year due to common core vs just two years ago. It really does not give kids enough time to learn through play and have some fun in kindergarten.

Oh man, I'm so sorry. Kansas went to Common Core the year Lauren started kindergarten, so at least she's had it from day #1, although not sure that's a good thing?! I have to teach myself how to do math sometimes to help her. Kindergarten was a breeze, first grade fall parent/teacher conference was fine, go to the second one in February in 1st grade and the teacher is talking about her coming to "math club" a few mornings a week at 7:30am as she was struggling. What?! That was the first I'd heard of a "struggle", I told her that before she loses another 40 mins of sleep, I'll be working with her on her math and get her up to speed, and that she was on the very next test. Some of the topics are just so convoluted and make no sense and Lauren's ENTIRE CLASS will fail, not slightly fail, fail with like 20% correct, so she'll give it to them to correct, and they still fail, so then she takes their online test (which they do at home ahead of time with their parents and should get 100% on or their parents aren't doing their jobs) and ( ... )
