Doubt . . . the movie

I just got done watching the movie Doubt, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (off of the play Shanley also wrote). It's got a really great cast, including a brief but dazzling performance Viola Davis. Great response. Whatever your beef was with the particulars of the story, the filmcraft here was top notch, with great performances all around.

As for the complaint about an enabling nun allowing a suspected pedophile to go, I would say this is consistent with my observations of the way people cope with their world. When an institution like the church sets the norm, and their norm includes apologizing for child molesters, most people will struggle with where the norm actually is -- especially when the institution in this case is supposed to be the moral authority. For lack of a better example, eating factory farmed meat is an institutional norm too that people have individual doubt about but don't have the backbone to resist. Man is an animal of conformity, with rare exceptions.
