While English is the official language, it is not forced upon people to exercise speaking it. It's a standard so that when you go to talk to any American it should be assumed that they speak English and thus you can communicate to them.

Now if we forced all foreign languages to be stopped and only English be spoken, that would be a violation of free speech.

I agree that is the standard. But to legislate it restricts free speech. In my opinion...
