That Was Yesterday

Oct 17, 2010 09:30

Went to Mexicali yesterday with Dan, Rex, and Roy so that Rex could blog the Mexicali gay pride parade. I decided it'd be more interesting if we crossed over into Mexico at Tecate and drove to Mexico that way because I always wanted to see La Rumorosa, a rocky mountain pass that descends from the mountains in the middle of Baja down to the desert ( Read more... )

Thanks so much for memorializing our intriguing day, for the driving, and for juggling multiple backseat driver instructions while still remaining fabulous... :-)

Accurate, but read it as "animals with sombreros (and also penises)."

First person to suggest only "penes" is correct gets the banhammer.

This is a great account, Chris. I do so love your travel writing (and Dan's). Since it's unlikely that I'll end up getting to most of the places you visit, I get my vicarious sense of adventure through your words. In this case, though, I might actually make it to Baja, so I read with a different kind of interest. Does the American Costco card work in Mexico?

Glad you like it! The American Costco card works just fine in Baja; we paid cash, and you should probably know that pricing goes up slightly on everything if you pay with a credit card. There was also confusing signage that said something about not accepting credit cards for amounts less than $100.

FWIW, the selection there is fairly close that what it is in the States; however, any of the Mexican produced products can be really good value (corn flakes, sugar, coffee, etc.) Alcohol is much cheaper if it's hard alcohol, slightly cheaper if it's beer, and very expensive if it's wine (Mexican taxes on wine are well north of 40%). I didn't check tire pricing, and I didn't look at fresh produce pricing either (because you can't take it back across the border).

That's a great review, Chris. Did I mention that this las time around when crossing from TIJ to SD I almost got my entire visa revoked because....I hadn't brought with me the last electricity bill with me?????They asked for it because I had to certify that I lived in Mexico (sounds stupid much? particularly when I had several IDs with my home address)

Regardless, I like Mexicali, and look forward for a quick trip together down to Guadalupe Valley. Hugs.

That border just gets more and more annoying the more I think about it.

I'm definitely doing the Guadalupe Valley next year. El MEson de Vino looks just fine, and at one-third the price of the American/European-owned glitzy wine-themed hotels, that means we can drink more wine. :)

I also forgot to mention that we (of course) visited the NaCo. store in Mexicali. They had the best selection yet, and lots of stuff in XXL. Earthquake shirts, too!

Ah, the NaCo store...cool. I saw some pretty rocking, non NaCo t-shirts last weekend in Guanajuato..should've taken some photographs for you (they had mommies on them!).

Count me on to the Valle de Gpe trip, will you?
