Les Triplettes de Belleville

We saw the Triplets of Belleville last night. It's a French animated movie and it was definitely weird. It was very arty and had virtually no dialogue - but I can't say that I liked it. I think the best description that I heard to sum it up is that it makes Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) seem mainstream.

I really liked the first half of it, and thought it bogged down a lot once they get to Belleville. There are some great sight gags here and there. (The cars the gangsters drive in Belleville are stretch 2CV Citroëns, which had me laughing, and I think the pianist on TV early on (when grandma decides Champion should play piano) was modeled after Glenn Gould.)

Spirited Away seems much, much weirder to me, but I bet it depends a lot on how much anime you've watched before. (In my case, not that much.)
