The below is my desired list of DVDs to own, those I consider ‘important’ for me to own. All of them I've seen, the ones in Bold I own, the others I plan on getting at some point. Please feel free to add suggestions onto the list. Films only, I'm up to speed on all the TV series I want to own (other than getting round to getting Season one of ( Read more... )

And does it have to be "worthwhile" to be enjoyable? I note that most of the films on your list are either classics (modern and contemporary), Japanese, or ones that the majority of a certain social group seem to find necessary(eg Kill Bill). What's missing, for me, from that collection is an element of something *personal* - something that others may not consider cool or worthwhile, but you're gonna own up to liking anyway, cos sometimes all you really want to get from a DVD is mindless entertainment. (Remember, I know your deep dark secret....RCR!) However, you are saved from being completely, inextricably up your own arse by the inclusion of a couple of terrible but fun films as Starship Troopers and Pirates of the Caribbean :-)

Also, for someone who has many 'classic' films on there, there are not so many old ones.

Is it the orginal 39 Steps you want to own or the remake?

The original, I dislike the remake.

On which note I need to add Scaramouche, Cyrano De Bergerac, The Great race, Prisoner of Zenda, Henry V.

Worthwhile isn't the same as enjoyable. But enjoyable isn't the same as 'wish to own and be able to watch anytime I like without going to Blocbusters'.

There are films I own that aren't on the list, and ones I'd left off my initial thoughts on it (as shown in comments above). Enjoying a film and wanting to own it aren't the same.

I debated putting Love Actually on, for example, and when I redo the final version and amke my amazon wishlist explode it will go on, but it wasn't in my initial thoughts on it. The list was also done as a way of structuring a 'what are the films I consider important to be seen in terms of Cinema as a whole while still being enjoyable'. Likewise Shrek - I enjoy but it's not one I feel I must own. It's one it would be nice to watch now and then but it's not an 'I should own this'.

It is, and yes I have it. The list was very much what came to mind over a morning and got thrown in the word doc I was using to compile it all.

Soul still (mostly) intact.
