Ooh, forgot one!

The LEGO MovieI took the older two girls to see this last Friday evening, since we're all big LEGO fans. It was even enough to interest Hermione, who generally says she would rather wait for a movie to be available to watch at home rather than go to the theater to see it. At least Hallie enjoys going to the theater! Anyway, I'd heard really good ( Read more... )

I know it's only February, but this was my favorite movie of 2014. Cam and I cannot stop talking about it.

What did your girls think about it? I felt like the humor was geared towards adults and much less so kids, but I'm not in the mindset of a child so I don't know! At the showing we went to, only a few kids laughed but the adults were hysterical.

I think I mentioned it in another post, but any movie that FoxNews' talking heads decry as a blatant attempt to brainwash kids into an anti-capitalism or pro-environment (yes, really) gets a hearty thumbs up from me even before I've seen it. ;)

I'm sure a lot of the satire went over their heads, but there was plenty of eye candy and sight gags and jokes they did get, so they enjoyed it quite a bit. I\d have to say I was most affected by it, because I sometimes find myself acting a bit like Will Ferrell's father character in the film--once I build a LEGO set, I kinda like it to stay together because it looks so cool. And of course the kids don't always agree. I'd never chastise them or put DO NOT TOUCH signs up like the father in the film, but it's an attitude I should try to keep in check, and remember what LEGOs are for in the first place. :)

hm, reminds me of another builder (or carpenter) man that was considered The Special and hoped to empower the people against a regime.

Now there's an interesting comparison! I imagine he felt much the same about conformity, hegemony and corporate greed as well. :)

I figured it would be good--LEGO did a direct-to-video Batman movie that was quite good (and I highly recommend it too), so I expected good things from this one. Their films (and video games, for that matter) have an interesting style, very self-referential and with a lot of wry humor. And I think they know their audience is both current kids and former kids who grew up with LEGO, so a lot of the humor and references are definitely geared towards the adults. Good stuff. :)

I always felt a bit too hemmed in by the 5-star scale, or even a 1-10 scale. 64 points gives me a lot more shades of granularity, plus it's arbitrary and weird and I like that. :) In general, I basically lay it out like this: 60+ are the top-notch, near-perfection, desert-island stuff. The 50s are outstanding and deserving of repeated viewing. 40s are solid, the sort of thing you might decide to leave on while channel surfing. 30s are competent and enjoyable enough, though they do have weak points. And 20s and below are varying shades of dreck, maybe with some merit but mostly to be avoided ( ... )
