First--again, I feel like I need to apologize for randomly vanishing and leaving some people hanging. You say that censorship should only be in place when the art in question is illegal - when it goes against the law. This is, I'm afraid, sophistry, since censorship laws themselves are by their nature part of the law. Perhaps you're thinking of censorship outside the law, but that doesn't happen on the state level, only at the level of individual co-operation. Although you neglect censorship's status as law, you do give Socrates the benefit of the doubt that protecting virtues and "for the good of the republic" are good things, but that what entails good is subject to debate. This, however, is not the point Socrates was making. He sets forth that the republic itself is good, and does so by creating an ideal republic, founded on human well-being (the argument is that the republic is a natural requirement of the human animal). His argument against art that supports unjust virtues is that people may be moved by art, and follow emotion instead of reason, to the detriment of all. Ever since someone told me Socrates thought women were "deformed men" I've had issues with him. I can't say I hate all his assertions but the salt grain I take with them? HUGE!

Plato (his student) on the other hand so far, that's my dude. Allegory of the Cave SERIOUSLY Rocked My World.
