I recall myself commenting on educational equity and meritocracy back in Chen's post on the GEP. While I think most of us can agree that students don't all have equal opportunities, what with the discrepancies in funding and all, I think what matters more is public opinion of such policies. The key is language, I think - ST will report policies as stated by government officials, rather than through the words of an analyst, after all.

The GEP will keep popping up until it morphs to a form acceptable to the public - in all probability, in a separate school with internal ability-driven streaming.
