UAB network policy hinders research

Ugh, I'm stuck having to put my workstation on wireless because as peon, I can't have root OR baremetal access to the box MY NIH grant paid for. I specifically speced the machine so I could play with ZFS on it. But that was before I found out that in order to connect to the gigabit ethernet, you have to give up all admin rights to the machine. WTF ( Read more... )

Yes, but they will too. Also they'll still be able to iLO the machine over the net. I was basically told "if you root the machine after we lock it down, we'll just come in and reimage it 'on your behalf' once nagios says it's fallen off the grid for too long" and if they find out you repeatedly do it they'll just deactivate your port.
