Once upon a long time ago, someone asked me to write a tut on cropping and text placement, so, here's the tut on cropping! :)

Very interesting and informative. The only thought that runs through my mind while I'm figuring out a good crop is "oh this looks good" :>

You know what I noticed though? And this is specifically pertaining to popular fandom icons like Lost or Harry Potter. You can crop an image to a point where it's almost unrecognizable but because people are familiar with the show/movie, they immediately know what they're looking at.

Like this:

lol, that's very true!

But, if you want the icon to mean something to other people as well, you couldn't get away with it, eh?

yeah, i was thinking about that earlier coz i saw a hp icon in the scene where hermione is threatening her wand at malfoy and all you can see is her armpit framing the shot and then some grass.

and also coz sets like harry potter and lost are so distinctive and in a way restricted, they're immediately recognized.

Its a nice tutorial but IMHO I think your wrong about KB's chin, jaw, lip crop. I think they do define her face allot. It a very popular crop right now where as I feel the second crop is just okay between the two of them. Still nice job.

yeah, now that i look at the first kb icon i think you're right. her cheeks/lower face are quite distinctive.

:]
