How many magician families are there and what do they control?

There are nine of them. Lezard, Chen, Nishimoto, Lira, Allam, Vox, Langevin, Ivanov and Devereux.

As far as 'control', if you mean what branch of magic:

Varies from demon lore to healing, water, illusions, kinesis, earth, fire, ice, wind and thunder, respectively.
