I've been trying to clean up my library, and while I'm making progress it's remarkably tough. I've sorted through all my bookcases now, which just leaves all the books that have randomly collected in odd corners around the house

Oh noooo! I LOVED Anna Karenina, but I read it in high school and at the time I actually didn't know anything about it or how it ended. I loved it less than War and Peace and his short stories, but there was a lot about it that really spoke to me.... In retrospect, though, it's a very very misogynistic story and I would probably have a different reaction now.
Liking the LOTR films more than the novels? Blasphemy!!! They are both perfection!
I should really finish Obernewtyn, I think I have those books around here somewhere...
I am enjoying it! the misogyny is a bit offputting but not as bad as it could be given its age. Perhaps I'll get angrier as the story progresses- it seems like the kind of thing that will get me good and ragey. I haven't read any other Tolstoy yet so I can't really compare.
And I'm a bad geek, I know. I am going to give LOTR another shot though- I've never managed to read any Tolkien book through to the end, and I have LOTR and The Hobbit on my unread shelf.
I haven't finished Obernewtyn either. Is the last book even out yet...? I started reading them when I was 14, almost half my lifetime ago. It feels odd to think of finishing the series, but I am excited about it :)
I think the only thing for it is to throw out all my other possessions so I can keep the books. I feel that this is a sensible and proper arrangement which any reasonable person should agree with.
I have a really hard time with letting go of books as well, even ones I've had a while, and particularly ones I haven't even read yet! I always feel good about giving them to libraries, because they'll just sell off what they don't need, and it makes money for them. And I love libraries, so that's totally worth it to me.
Even though I am not religious anymore either, a couple years back I purchased a Bible at the dollar store as a reference book. I also wanted to read Song of Solomon, because I remembered it being really beautiful.
What a good idea! Any books that I can't sell I was going to donate to an op shop, but public libraries are a much better idea.
As well as my children's Bible which is very, very abridged, I have a copy of the Bible that I had to have for school. I do use it sometimes for reference, and I'll occasionally get the urge to read over a story or even just hold it in my hands and feel the thin silky paper and read pages of anything at all in a solemn and certain tone.
