clyde_park's 30 Day Meme For Adult Males, Day 6

Happy birthday to goldenmoonbear!

6. Think of a movie that you like that most people don't and defend it.This is another very open ended question. What constitutes "most people"? Is there even such a thing anymore? Everyone is so fragmented into their own interest groups these days that I could probably name the most idiotic movie I've ever seen and I'll bet ( Read more... )

Yeah, as I was thinking about what movie I would defend, I realized that saying "most" people probably wasn't the correct way to phrase it. When I thought of several movies I could write about I realized that there are plenty of people who are fans of those movies. So I guess I could have said, "Talk About A Movie That You Really Like And Explain Why You Like It To A Theoretical Person Who Doesn't Like It." Or maybe, "Talk about A Movie You Like That Most People May Not Have Seen."

Whatever. Your answer was good.

Mine is easily 300. All of my friends thought is was offensive and culturally insensitive and crazily all America-patriotism-yay war. Me? Sure, I saw all that, and I LOVE IT. Which is weird, because I'm usually down with the sausage fest or with lots of killing.

Aha, so you're taking "most people" to mean your personal friends. That's one way of looking at it, although I don't think I could find that kind of agreement from my friends on any movie. 300 has a score of 7.8 on IMDB with over 239,000 votes, making it one of their highest rated movies. Using that criteria, "most people" really liked 300, and you are one of them. (I've never seen it, but I have a feeling I would probably like it too seeing as I like Troy and Rome and Cleopatra and almost every other sword and sandal epic.)

Well, it wasn't just my personal friends - but given the liberal circles I traveled in and the types of media I read, clearly they weren't totally alone. And I suspect that many people who liked the film were not able to see it for the ridiculous sausage-fest that it is!

I know what you mean, I just thought the use of the phrase "most people" was the more interesting aspect of Clyde's question rather than the part about defending a movie. We all have our own understandings of what "most people" means. In my circle of internet friends and media I also hear only bad things about 300, but 239,000 people on IMDB seem to love it. I suppose there are probably 239,000 other people who hate it or just weren't interested in seeing it and therefore did not vote on IMDB. My own conclusion is that "most people" are fickle and/or more complicated than a simple like/not like system or 10 star scale can measure. You know, sometimes I feel like watching a high-brow Oscar nominated documentary about quantum physics and sometimes I'd rather see Jack Black dancing with a monkey. Can't I like both of those things?
