The "first five" artistic challenge.

Oct 15, 2006 12:09

I, too, will do some form of (written) art for the first five people to tell me what art means to them. No second chances, no "did I make it in time"s will be rewarded in any way, not even with sarcasm. And I don't require an essay in five-paragraph form; just tell me why you look at or enjoy art, and that will be enough to get me on my way ( Read more... )

I like art because it takes me back to the time it was created in. I try my best to picture the artist creating the piece I'm viewing. I like to imagine their surroundings, the lighting, the force of their gestures, their physical expression, their mental state, their intent and how it manifests itself. I used to want future generations to wonder the same about my pieces, but then I turned it around when I became interested in restoration. I wanted to continue to celebrate work of the past by giving it new life. There would always be plenty of time for my work to be appreciated later. For now there were older pieces that still needed to be heard.

So, I enjoy viewing art because it takes me out of myself and lets me feel through someone else. And I enjoy creating art because it's just what I've always known, coming from artist parents, but also because I can experience those things that I wonder about with artists of the past.

Art is a safe way to examine myself. I can be degrading or embittered or arrogant or polyanna pure with the rose colored glasses, and no one has to know.

what was the question again? Oh yeah. Something about art and why I like it...
I like paper_machete's answer. Damn. Can't get on anyone's coat-tails, though, I suppose.
Um.
I like art, in all forms, because it brutally forces or gently persuades or seductively tempts me to view this existence from someplace outside of myself and I dig that.
It also encourages non-linear thinking, which I am all for, and does so without me having to introduce any illegal (or legal) substances into my beautiful (though slightly bruised) body.
I am sure there is more...
