I have not one but TWO spoiler filled things to say. First I went and saw Star Trek last night and it was made of awesome. Just in the previews:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (which I'm going to watch)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra (which I'm going to watch SO HARD OMG YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA! Christopher Eccleston!!)

Yeah, I agree with both your negative points (We actually had one of the folks in our group leave part way through because he was so distressed *Cue eye rolling*)

The way I make it ok in my own head is with the whole "alternate/parallel universe" idea. "Traditional" Star Trek events still happened/will happen. The event of this movie just created a whole new reality parallel to the one we're familiar with.
I figure it's no more ridiculous than the idea of us discovering and harnessing material that can make black holes, or running into almost exclusively humanoid intelligent aliens out there, or any number of awesome technobabble things that get thrown around :P
