Renovation Adventures: Ceiling Fan Edition

I'm technically halfway through installing a new ceiling fan in my bedroom. This likely would have been easier if I'd just bought a light kit and attached it to the ceiling fan that was in there, but the fan that was in there was one of those completely generic white ceiling fans likely picked up on sale. true. get some skinny guy to crawl around in your attic for you.

that said, i go attic crawling all the time. roofs are built pretty solidly, just walk on the joists!

but ive seen a similar setup once, but all teh extra wire turned out to be a big loop of a single wire than then got cut off inside the ceiling box to get other things to fit. completely dead, not hooked up to anything. just pulled the now 7 inch chunks of wire out, we were good to go.

I mean I don't want to see how fucked up the previous owner's wiring job is. There are several indications that the previous owner considered himself quite the handyman, but he really didn't know what he was doing.
