As I've mentioned here before, DC comics have recently retconned character
Stephanie Brown's death and brought her back to life. It got me thinking about retcon in the Prince of Tennis anime which is by no means as awesome, but still kind of interesting.
Do non comic fans use the term? I don't really know... have a
Wikipedia Definition just in case:
Retroactive continuity (or informally retcon) is the deliberate changing of previously established facts in a work of serial fiction. The change itself is informally referred to as a "retcon", and the act of writing and publishing a retcon is called "retconning".
Aha there we go. Now let's begin!
Retcon #1: The Rikkai Uniform
Probably the most well known one. I'm guessing it was a case of the anime working with black and white pictures from the manga, then when Konomi wrote later chapters and did a colour spread they went "oh shit!"
Retcon #2: Ryoma's Volleyball Skills
In episode 90 Ryoma was like a pro volleyball player, teaming up with Kaido and totally pwning Sasabe and his dad. Even kicking sand in his face couldn't stop him! Fast forward to the seventh OVA; Ahahahahahahahahahaha... aha... ahem *cough*
Retcon #3: No Personal Growth for You!
So Kirihara starts off being a psychodevilbrat. Red eyes, slight oral fixation, ra ra rah. Then Fuji beats hims. Bring on Senbatsu camp, where he's a wrongly accused victim and he mellows out a bit. By the time he gets wedged in the net he's... well look at him.
"It's just a flesh wound!"
They made him a nice guy! I mean he's still a bit bratty, but at least he doesn't look like he'd kick your puppy or shoot your beloved Uncle Ben. Alas! This was an arc that Konomi didn't write which means, much like the red uniforms, the character development got canned.
...does anyone else think of that scene in 'Carrie' when they see this?
I suppose you could say he went psycho because Liliaden Krauser was just THAT good, but i dunno. Kirihara's attitude change was a recurring theme and my second favourite thing about Senbatsu. My first favourite thing kind of goes without saying these days.
FUCK YES.
I could totally write a whole post expressing my love for this awesome OTP+1, but I kind of have three other journals for that. Plus I'm going off on a tangent, ahaha :D;;
Retcon #4: US Open OR The Nationals
It was all so heart-wrenching! Our dear boy had to choose between the US Open and playing in the Nationals, which were on at the same time. After a bit of soul searching, a fight with Momo and a STUPID METAPHOR INVOLVING PIGEONS he decided to go to America and beat Lleyton Hewitt. As you do.
Then the producers realised there was more money to be made, sent him back to Japan and hey what do you know! He still had time to play alongside Seigaku! \o/
Retcon #5 was gonna be Atobe's magical growing hair but it's officially a wig now, isn't it? XD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As far as retcon goes these are mild; nothing compared to Disney denying the existance of Simba's son
Kopa for example. In fact you're probably thinking "Kath stop being so picky!" but that's not it at all. In fact I support it.
They should have fixed this, yo.
Yukimura's Guillain-Barré syndrome can't be operated on. Konomi admitted he fucked up. Seeing as they never stated in the anime WHAT was wrong with him it wouldn't even be a *proper* retcon; they could have just thrown in a line like "It's a good thing the doctors fixed Buchou's cardiac shunt!" and everything would have been peachy. The anime has deviated from the manga in worse ways, no?
It's Inui. You will never convince me otherwise...
Uh, scrap the cardic shunt idea. The more i look at my screencaps the more it looks like they're not even operating on his thoracic cavity... they're actually operating uh, lower... OKAY MOVING ON.
Lets discuss it: Anything I've missed? Or that I've said and you disagree with? I can't decide is #3 is my own bias so I'd like some feedback on that. Also, anything in canon you'd like to see changed?
