Shiny shopping!

Yesterday someone told me about a bead shop in town I have never heard of, Azillion Beads. Turns out it is on Conger right by Oregon Leather, so I checked it out. Very cool place!! Lots of nice beads of all sorts, including many things I'd never seen before, and the prices seemed fairly reasonable. Lots of beads and findings in copper, which ( Read more... )

A group of us have been making Anglo-Saxon style books (wood board and leather covers) using the method I learned at an Ithra a few years back. It's fun! They'll be Egil's prizes / gifties.

I can't think how to describe it other than a nail with a hollow triangular shaft. Unfortunately the instructor was from Canada, so god knows where she got them. I had no idea it was this obscure...isn't that always the way.

Alysaundre solved the nail quandary. Here's what they look like:

Apparently it's canoe TACK not canoe nail, which is why google gave me nothing.

Did Alex or Angharad show you the site token from 12th Night?? It was a cool little hand made book! Very spiff. I'm sure if you asked on the Kingdom Laurel list, the bookmakers there might know where to get this little item.

Don't worry, I have 5/8" and 3/4" brass canoe tacks at home, as well as an online source that I buy from often which carries a copper tacks from 3/16" to 5/16" in length, designed to be clinched (bent over) or peened. They also carry square-cut nails, which are nearly identical to period hand-forged nails. FYI, that source is: www.leevalley.com They're based out of Canada, carry fantastic woodworking tools and hardware, as well as some really cool gardening stuff.

Here's their nails and tacks section:

Hooray! My hardware hero. If you could bring about a dozen of the smaller canoe tacks on Wednesday, that would be fabulous.

Of course it's all in knowing what to call something. I got zilch googling "canoe nails", but "canoe tacks" brings it right up. Sigh. Me shopping for nails is the equivalent of when a non-painter comes in to buy "shellac" and I have to figure out if they actually mean a bug-based finish, a modern solvent-soluble resin, or a water-based clear acrylic.
