Freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental rights (along with habeus corpus). If you cannot speak, write, photograph, film, document, and publish freely, then information about the abrogation of rights, about political or corporate malfeasance, or about anything of relevance to a free and open society is merely window-dressing.

I wonder why, if this is the case, that people are so easily convinced that frequent violations of said rights are justified to make them safe? Personally as much as I detest the Tories, I cannot trust Labour with civil liberties here, and am hoping they lose in 2010 as a result. What a funny world we live in.

Because people are stupid and short-sighted. They consistently fail to perceive that it is precisely the speech that they detest most; the images they find most disgusting and unworthy of protection; the criminal they see as most despicable and as text-book rationale for a death penalty; that need the protection of enshrined and immutable civil rights the most.

The British government has failed this test all too often. I congratulate you on your stance; however difficult it may be.
